Hydration - the Key to Active Life Styles!
Understanding the importance of hydration is vital to health and fitness. The human body is made up of
approximately 60% water. When participating in physical activities, your body loses water and needs to be
replenished. Consuming less than sufficient amounts of water during physical activity can lead to dehydration.
The World Health Organization recommends drinking 6 to 8 large glasses of water a day.
Athletes should drink at least 17 fl oz before and after physical activity, as well as hydrating during
exercise.
Children are more vulnerable to the effects of dehydration than adults. Because kids bodies don't cool down as
efficiently as adults, parents need to encourage active kids to drink often, and have a water bottle available
to them at all times. Pack a water bottle in your child's backpack and lunchbox before heading off to school or
other activities. Having access to a water bottle encourages greater fluid intake.
